Slut is not a bad word

Slut is a word that has followed me around since I first became sexually active in my teenage years. It’s rare that anyone ever gets called a slut with positive connotations.

That needs to change.

Could I list all the reasons people have ever tried to insult me by calling me a slut? No, because I can’t even count them all. Just a few include posting photos in my underwear online, having casual sex with people, having rumours spread that I’ve been sleeping with people in relationships, and for wearing a low-cut top that showed off my cleavage.

Do I care? Also no.

I am a slut.

Louder for the people in the back: I am a slut.

And I’m not ashamed. If posting photos in my underwear online where I look FINE AF makes me a slut, then so be it. If having consensual sex with multiple people makes me a slut, then so be it. Sex should be celebrated, and as long as all people involved are consenting and you’re safe, why should it matter how many sexual partners someone has? The correct answer is, it doesn’t.

When I was a teenager, I had numerous rumours spread about me because I was sexually active. I used to shy away, thinking having sex and exploring my body was a bad thing. The older I get, the more I realise that it’s nothing to be ashamed of. These days I’m always openly talking about my sex life, communicating with partners on how to get me to orgasm, sharing tips with my friends on where to buy the best sex toys and generally helping my friends to become more sex positive which is a great thing.

Let’s work together to help people realise that it’s ok to enjoy sex, casual or not, and that being open about your sex life isn’t a bad thing.

If being a slut is a bad thing, then I don’t want to be good.
